Pause Breathe Smile is a mind health programme for children and is being delivered to over 140,000 children across Aotearoa. This year, for the very first time, it will be offered to kura and Māori medium schools in Te Reo Māori. This programme is called Whaiwāhi Mauri Tau.

Whaiwāhi Mauri Tau is not a direct translation of the Pause Breathe Smile programme. It has been adapted in consultation with kaiako Māori and tamariki in Māori immersion settings. The name of the programme means a space and time to be present and allow one’s mauri to settle.

Over the last few years, Pause Breathe Smile has worked steadily to ensure that materials and activities available in English are available into Te reo Māori. The Trust has also created new resources that come from a Māori world view in consultation with kaiako, tamariki and kura Māori.

A pātaka of Te Reo Māori resources is available for all trained educators. This includes printed handbooks and teaching cards, student learning journals, online audio practices, and videos. The training workshop for Māori medium is delivered in English and Te Reo Māori, encompassing a Māori world view, cosmology and philosophy.

Input from kaiako at the Māori pilot kura who experienced Pause Breathe Smile first hand also helped resolve some contextual issues and terms of translation. Even the artwork of the ākonga who participated in the pilot has been integrated into the new Te Reo teaching handbook for kaiako, to bring these concepts to life.

Just as importantly, the Māori Development team within the Pause Breathe Smile Trust is undertaking continued intellectual and philosophical work to ensure and reinforce alignment between the programme’s lessons and implementation with Te Ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori. The Pause Breathe Smile Trust is committed to ensuring that this programme resonates with Māori learners by investing in ongoing development and research.
The pilot programme worked with Māori learners in Māori immersion settings, Whaiwāhi Mauri Tau is being developed based on how tamariki respond from their own Māori world views.

Primarily delivered in schools, by kaiako, it is Mātauranga Māori based, aligned to kura Māori principles and learning approaches, and is fully funded by Southern Cross.
